Today we have a very special guest post from my summer intern, Lorena, and she’s going to give us some tips on how to liven up our homes with indoor plants. Take it away, Lorena!
A very smiley hello to all of you! My name is Lorena Farias and I am currently a Fashion Merchandising student minoring in Graphic Design. It’s safe to say I love anything that gets my creative juices flowing and I am always on the lookout for my next big inspiration whether it be related to fashion, design, or daily life!
Every time I visit the supermarket, I find myself googly-eyeing the plant section… Am I the only one who can’t help herself? Whether you’re a first-time plant parent or an experienced gardener, here are some of the best indoor plants to liven up your home (and award you some bonus points when it comes to decor).
The Fiddle-leaf Fig has been the houseplant of the moment for a few moments now. If you’re considering owning this plant, make sure to find a spot in your home with lots of natural light. Leave it there to enjoy the sunshine and it’ll thank you back by purifying the air in your home. Last but not least, don’t forget to put it in a cute pot!
If you’re worried a Fiddle-Leaf Fig will take up too much space or that you won’t be able to care for it properly, I recommend trying out a smaller, easy-to-care plant like the Pothos (pictured hanging over the Fiddle-Leaf Fig in the image above). I LOVE the way they trail and can easily be draped on shelves, tall furniture or windows. Best of all, they are almost impossible to kill which is definitely a plus!
Growing fresh herbs in your kitchen is pretty much having the best of both worlds: decor and dining! It’s as easy as visiting your local gardening store for seeds or purchasing pre-grown herbs. Some of my favorites to keep handy in the kitchen are mint for my green smoothies and basil for pesto sauce. Here’s a similar planter option to get you started, or you can make your own from one of our previous tutorials! Find out how to do it here.
Forget tropical print wallpaper… Instead, opt out for a lively Bird of Paradise plant that’ll accent your home with just the right amount of tropical flair! It’s large, arching leaves and tall stems are sure to make a bold statement in any room, but F.Y.I. it will thrive the most in sunny ones. Treat your plant right—with plenty of sunlight and frequent watering—and it can grow over six feet tall! Amazing right?
Humid spaces with minimal light like your bathroom are the perfect hang out spot for a Snake plant. Other indoor plants that thrive in this kind of environment are: Boston ferns, Spider plants, Bamboo, Rubber plants and Aloe Vera. My personal preference is to choose an assortment of hanging plants and potted plants to add into the mix. I find that always looks the greatest!
Looking to incorporate color into your home, but want something a little more unique than a traditional green plant? How about a pink one? Calathea Whitestar plants have a vibrant pink color that peeks through its striated leaves for an extra decorative touch. If you’re a sucker for anything pink like I am then this one is a must-have!
