Happy 2019 friends! For those of you who are new here, throughout the past year I made or photographed a new ampersand (almost) every day and shared them all on my Instagram stories. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the project now that it’s over, but it was definitely a challenge to come up with that many different ways to create the same symbol.
I started the project for a couple of reasons:
- I wanted to challenge myself to consistently think outside the box
- I’ve been a typography lover ever since I discovered it in college and wanted to delve into it in a different way
- Mike and I used the ampersand everywhere at our wedding so it felt appropriate to explore it more
- I wanted to create a better sense of community on Design Fixation and encourage others to be creative every single day
It was fascinating to see how the project caught on, even just on a personal level; each time I met up with friends, ampersands were always a topic of conversation. I loved hearing people’s favorites, and also their ideas – I used a lot of them, while some were too tough to execute (an ampersand shaved into someone’s head, a sunburn ampersand, a tattoo, etc. 🙂 )
I made a short video with some of my favorite #ampersand365 moments, and below are a few others. To see more, head to my Instagram highlights.
And finally, an ampersand made of photos of ampersands… a fitting end to a memorable project:
