Looking for a fun and easy Christmas toddler craft that looks great but doesn’t require lots of complicated setup? You’ve come to the right place! This project can be quick if you’re short on time, or you can extend each step and use it to kill some time on a rainy day.
Simply pick up a set of these pastry stampers/cutters on Amazon and make a batch of uncolored play dough with glitter. Here’s the absolute best glitter play dough recipe that I’ve found (and adapted to be perfect):
- 1 cup flour
- 1/3 cup salt
- 2/3 tablespoon cream of tartar
- 1 cup water
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- Silver glitter
Mix the dry ingredients together in a small bowl. Combine the wet ingredients in a large nonstick sauce pan. Pour the dry ingredients into the pan, whisking as you go. Add desired amount of glitter. Heat the mixture on the stove over medium heat, stirring constantly with a spoon. Stop once mixture has just formed a loose ball. Cool and store in an airtight container.
Your little one can take part in all of the measuring, pouring and mixing… then have them take a break while you heat it over the stove (it only takes a couple of minutes).
And Now For The Easy Toddler Christmas Craft Portion of the Project…
Once you’ve made the play dough, roll it out flat and push one of the snowflake pastry cutters into the dough to create the ornament. Gently press the button on the top to stamp the pattern into the ornament. Carefully remove it from the rest of the dough and sprinkle a bit more glitter on top. Use a toothpick to make a small hole in the top. Let it air dry and then add a thin ribbon loop so you can hang it on the tree. I used ribbon similar to this.
Looking to kill some extra time? Keep your toddler engaged longer with these tips:
- Have them sprinkle the glitter into the play dough themselves, and cover most of the holes on the container with tape so it comes out slowly.
- Set them up in front of the sink once you’ve made the play dough so they can “wash” the dishes. They’ll have lots of fun splashing around in the water.
- Once you’ve finished making the ornaments, give them some kitchen utensils, cookie cutters and rubber stamps to use with the play dough.
We made a bunch of these to give as gifts to family members… you can write your toddler’s name and the date on the back with a paint pen and it will be a treasured memento for years to come!
