Is beautiful living room toy storage even possible? I was resigned to the fact that our living room would be a toy dumping zone for the next decade, until I started doing some online shopping and I realized that bookshelves with baskets could be the perfect solution.
I found these pretty white bookshelves with baskets inside of them and they’re absolutely perfect for our living room. I love that I can grab one of the baskets, unload the toys to use with my little one and then pop it back in the shelf when we’re done. And of course I had to add a little DIY touch, so I attached some small chalkboards to label the contents of each basket.
If you’re interested in re-creating this look, head over here to check out the bookshelves I got. And here’s the rest of Wayfair’s awesome storage selection if you want to try a different style. And then you can just grab a few small 2×4 inch chalkboards at your local craft store or online to label the baskets. Keep scrolling to find out how to attach them.
Here’s what you’ll need to re-create my living room toy storage setup:
– Bookcases
– 2×4 inch chalkboards
– Scissors
– Hot glue gun
– Chalk
The chalkboards that I found had little string hangers on them, so I started by cutting those off. Then I just put a line of hot glue around the edge of the back of the chalkboard and attached it to the basket below the handle hole.
Did you know that you can use a pencil sharpener to create a point on a piece of chalk? Yup, I know… mind blown. I read that a while ago and it totally works.
Label the contents of each basket and you’re ready to go! No more guessing what’s inside the baskets, and when your kiddo gets older she can practice writing by labeling them herself!
The bookshelves happened to coordinate well with some of the other furniture in our living room, and the baskets were very similar to one that we already had in the TV stand… so they were the perfect choice. Hope you like the way my living room toy storage turned out – we sure do!
