Spring may have seemed a long way off during the dreary days of January, but now that March is here, warmer temperatures are right around the corner. And as Mother Nature undergoes her annual metamorphosis, your home should, too. This doesn’t have to be spring cleaning, necessarily — more like a spring refresh. This season is the perfect time to consider new ways to revamp the organization in your home and incorporate new techniques with flair.

Instead of trying to tackle your entire home, start with the living room. Make a few simple, quick tweaks to create a space that’s more livable and more aesthetically pleasing. Are you interested in updating the living room, but still not quite sure where to begin? Here are a few ideas to get the creative (and organizational) juices flowing.

Make Your Seating Pull Double Duty

Are your comfy chairs and overstuffed ottomans just sitting there, supporting bottoms and feet? Then you’re getting ripped off. Many furnishings are capable of multi-tasking, so it might be time for an upgrade. Opt for seating that contains extra storage, like a hollowed-out ottoman where you can stow extra blankets or a bench seat with cabinets underneath to tuck away toys. You can apply this principle to coffee and end tables, which should always have drawers in order to earn their keep in your space.

Add a Floating Shelf or Two

Are you running out of floor space for your organizational add-ons? Then start to take advantage of the vertical space instead. Install a floating shelf in your living room and deck it out with pieces of décor or knick-knacks that have been floating around aimlessly up until now. This is a great way to organize your living room while simultaneously giving it some extra aesthetic appeal. And don’t feel like you need to be an experienced hammer-wielder in order to hang up the shelf. Just look for a floating shelf that comes with all of the hardware you need and follow the directions for a relatively pain-free installation process.

Enlist Wide Windowsills for Extra Storage

You might not even need to add anything to your space in order to make it look cuter and more organized. Maybe it’s just a matter of seeing what’s already in front of you, like wide windowsills. If your home boasts windowsills deep enough for a cat to nap on, that’s a good sign that they’re also capable of helping to organize your personal possessions — like your book collection. Create a makeshift library in your living room by lining the windowsill with the books that were once stacked on your coffee table.

Find a Chic Wastebasket

The kitchen and bathroom obviously need wastebaskets, but you might not think to put one in your living room. Or even if you do think it could come in handy, you might resist because you think it’ll be an eyesore. The reality is that you won’t regret having a wastebasket handy when you have a scrap of paper or a granola bar wrapper to toss, and lots of cute options exist. From Target to Pier1, many different stores will have chic wastebaskets at different price points. Snag one for your living room.

Keep Your Cords in Order

One of the best ways to maintain a chic, polished look in your living room is to wrangle the cords flowing from your TV and any other electronics. Leaving the cords from a mounted TV exposed creates the feeling of chaos, and no amount of decorative accents can erase that. So enlist a simple cord organizer to keep everything in its proper place. Try plain white tubing that you can affix directly to the wall, guiding your cords to the outlet without ever exposing them to the eye.

Rethink Your Furniture Altogether

Maybe it’s not the lack of a wastebasket or the unruly cords that are causing the disorganized feel in your living room. It could simply be that your furniture isn’t quite right. It might be time to choose some new furniture for your living room. Hand-me- downs are fine when you're first out on your own, but eventually, you're going to want brand new pieces that are constructed with sturdy components and grown-up
extras, like upholstery that resists stains. Consider upgrading if your furnishings are lacking.

With so many ways to organize your living room this spring, it should be easy to add an extra dose of style to your space. Whether you want to keep things simple and just repurpose your windowsills or you’re interested in going all-out and buying a new living room set, guests will notice the difference. And once you really love your living room, you might even be quicker to host your friends. So, refresh your home and plan a springtime celebration to show off all the work you’ve done!
