I have a lot of wine corks at my house. Like maybe too many. So I’m always trying to come up with fun ways to use them in my projects. So when I walked by the potted herbs at the store, it hit me… wine cork plant markers! So I opened up a bottle of 90+ Cellars wine (okay three), invited some friends over to help me drink it, and got to work.
Here’s what you’ll need for your wine cork plant markers:
- Used wine corks
- Acrylic craft paint
- Paintbrush
- Black Sharpie
- Gorilla glue (or any type of super glue)
- Pliers
- Gold wire
- Painter’s tape
Begin by wrapping a piece of painter’s tape around the cork, about a third of the way down (make sure that the corkscrew hole is on the opposite end). The tape probably won’t stick to the cork all that well, but it will stick to itself – so wrap it all the way around.
Paint the top section of the cork that is not covered with tape. Let it dry and do a second coat if necessary.
Cut a 6 inch piece of gold wire and cover the end with Gorilla glue. Insert it into the existing corkscrew hole (if it’s way off-center, poke a hole in the center with a small phillips head screwdriver). Gently set it down on the table to dry.
Last, write the name of your plant on the painted section using a black Sharpie.
The result is colorful and spring-like… and I’m desperately in need of both right now!
You could also use these wine cork plant markers to label outdoor plants in the garden… but I used mine for my potted herb plants inside because there’s still snow on the ground here. Yes, I’ll be hibernating for the foreseeable future… or at least until the trees start budding.
This is such a great way to use up a few of those extra wine corks that I’m sure you have lying around 😉 You can also experiment with different colors… lighter paint with colored Sharpies would be a fun combination.
I had a glass of the Langhe Rosso while I was whipping up some pasta sauce with basil and it was fantastic. For another fun wine cork idea, check out this post. Happy crafting (and wine drinking) friends!
