This year is like no other, and most of us have been spending (or at least hope to spend) more time on self-care. For me, in addition to many other things, that includes getting plenty of quality sleep. And that requires a calm space that feels super inviting and cozy. So today I’m sharing a few tips on how to transform your bedroom into the ultimate retreat!
Add Texture
My first and favorite tip… add textural elements. Unique throw pillows are a great way to do this; they’ll make your bed feel inviting and oh-so-comfy. You can also create textural elements by picking things like fuzzy rugs, soft blankets, woven textiles, etc. I’m a big fan of the affordable Ikea Rens sheepskin rug.
Personalize
Add monograms, initials or other sentimental items that make your space feel like yours. We have metal letters flanking the bed that we bought at a vintage shop in Florida… they add character and remind me of our trip 🙂
Layer Lighting
It’s important to layer lighting just like you would textiles. The general rule of thumb is to make sure that a room has three different types of light – our bedroom has overhead lighting, task lamps and candlelight. You might also consider floor lamps, string lights, etc. This fringe-tastic pillow is from HomeGoods.
Add Scent
Natural beeswax or soy candles are a great way to infuse your bedroom with a pleasant aroma… be sure to pick a scent that is relaxing like lavender. Essential oil diffusers are another good way to add scent to your space.
Layer Textiles
The key is to build up multiple layers of different types of blankets, throw pillows and rugs. Just be sure to pick items that have one unifying color, and stick to solid colors if you don’t feel comfortable mixing patterns. This throw blanket from Boll & Branch added a beautiful textural layer to our bed (and is a perfect cover for hot sleepers like myself).
Add Plants
I firmly believe that every room in the house should have at least one plant. Maybe that makes me a crazy plant lady… but I’m okay with it! Try pothos if you have a brown thumb – they are virtually fool-proof and do well in darker rooms, especially if you put them in a vase of water instead of soil.
So there you have it, my best tips for transforming your bedroom into the ultimate retreat!
