There’s no getting around it… babies are squirmy and tough to dress. But bodysuits and rompers are probably the easiest pieces of clothing to dress your little one in. Just slip it over their head and snap the bottom and you’re ready to go. But let’s be honest, they’re usually pretty boring… just plain colors or the occasional not-so-tasteful pattern. There’s definitely something to be said for solid colored bodysuits because they can be paired with almost any type of pants. But I just kept thinking that there must be a way to spice them up a bit. Enter the fringe trim bodysuit!
I bought a few of these awesome Hanes bodysuits… they’re incredibly soft, stretchy and affordable to boot. And the short sleeved Gerber Onesies® are great too, perfect for the summer. I also tried some different types of fringe – I love this magenta fringe by Wright’s, and this variety pack from Amazon.
So here’s what you’ll need for your fringe trim bodysuit:
– Trim of your choice (fringe, tassels, mini pom poms, etc.)
– Bodysuit
– Scissors
– Pins
– Coordinating thread
– Sewing machine (or a needle if you’re hand sewing)
Begin by pinning your trim to the bodysuit. You can start with fringe trim only, or you can layer two types of trim as I’ve done here. Open the area where the front and back panels overlap on the shoulder and pin the trim just underneath the thick fold-over bodysuit neckline.
Sew along the edge of the trim using a matching thread color (optional: for a more finished look, use bobbin thread that matches the bodysuit). Use a zig zag stitch so the trim has a big of give when you’re taking it on and off of baby.
Note: You can still do this project even if you don’t have a sewing machine! Just hand sew with small stitches. Or you could even use colored embroidery floss to sew everything together for a different look.
Some fringe trim has thread that keeps the fringe straight… gently pull one end of it and it should just slip right off.
And that’s it! I told you it was easy. You can experiment with different trims, colors and combinations… and you’ll never have a boring onesie again!

Here’s my little one rocking her fringe trim bodysuit and loving it. It goes great with jean shorts and chubby knees 😉
