Interior Design Trends for Spring 2020

Today Kacey Bradley has some predictions for decor trends that will be popular this spring. Take it away, Kacey!

Like anything, interior design trends shift continuously. In the past, we saw a rise in accent walls, mirrored furniture and granite countertops. Homeowners went gaga over concrete flooring, arch entranceways and all-white color schemes. What’s to come in spring 2020?

Sustainable Materials

Today’s homeowners and renters want ways to decorate with eco-friendly materials. According to one survey of American consumers, 48% claimed they would change their shopping habits to reduce environmental impact. Due to this shift, experts predict the sustainability market will reach a value of $150 billion by 2021.

Designers interested in this trend should look for materials and products made with minimal impact on the environment, such as antique, vintage and reclaimed goods. For example, you can create a stylish wood floor from old barn planks.

Warm Colors and Patterns

In the past decade, neutral colors reigned supreme. Interior designs were a mix of hushed hues and tones, such as cream, ivory and beige. In 2020, however, it’s all about that pop of color. Try something warm, such as shades of pink, buttery yellows and earth tones.

Beyond color, patterns are also becoming more prevalent, especially for textile designs. Try a bold print that stands out and catches the eye. Plus, don’t be afraid to try pattern matching, where the same design flows from the floor to the upholstered furniture or somewhere else.

A Mix of Old and New

Gone are the days of straight, clean lines and bold luxury. Today’s designers want a mix of both old and new, a chic setting mixed in with life’s comforts. The juxtaposition of the concept highlights each unique piece while still providing a sense of cohesion.

The goal of mixing old and new is to show off the homeowner or renter’s personality. Perhaps they have stacks of vintage books and paperbacks lining built-in bookcases. As a contrast, they might opt for statement lighting fixtures or quirky rug designs.

Natural Light

Today’s homeowners and renters don’t want to sit in the dark. Instead, they’re looking for natural light that floods through each room. Sunlight adds a level of depth to a space that you can’t achieve through artificial lighting.

To meet this goal, many designers opt for high-quality windows and skylights. As a bonus, these features keep cold and warm air in your home, leading to increased energy efficiency. Quality windows withstand the test of time, saving you money in utilities and benefiting the environment.

Funky Bathrooms

Your bathroom doesn’t have to be a boring place where you get ready in the morning. Instead, turn it into an area where you can experiment and have fun. Try bold colors, materials and wallpaper, anything that livens up the space and gives it a unique feel.

Why not try a daring, black granite sink with brass fixtures? Perhaps you found an expressive, busy wallpaper that won’t work in a larger room. Don’t be afraid to get creative and think outside the box.

Handmade Decor

This spring, designers will see an increased focus on handmade goods, those that have some connection to the maker. Consumers want brands with a story and purpose they feel connected to. Instead of mass-produced items, they want unique pieces they can’t find anywhere else.

In one study, researchers asked consumers what attracts them to one brand over another. About 66% said they look for a company that has a great culture and does what it says it will do. Another 50% say they look for businesses that stand up for societal and cultural issues.

Whether you’re an interior design expert or homeowner, it’s essential to stay on top of trends. What changes can we expect in spring 2020? From sustainable materials to natural lighting, the year is sure to be one full of style and color.
