While I’m on maternity leave, I’ve asked a few of my favorite bloggers to contribute to Design Fixation. Today, my friend Marlene from Idle Hands Awake will be sharing 14 stunning fall decor ideas using botanical elements. Take it away Marlene!
Flowers aren’t the first decoration we tend to think of as the air turns crisp and the leaves begin to turn, but bringing the outdoors in is a good idea any time of year. Seasonal flowers and other floral elements help add beauty, serenity, and life to our homes (and I would definitely argue, fortify us for the upcoming winter!). Check out these three understated techniques for decorating with florals in the fall.
Use Dainty Flowers
Never underestimate the power of a delicate bloom to transform a space. Whether a single flower arranged just so, or an ethereal grouping of buds, you don’t have to go big to make a statement.

Dried Lunaria biennis, or “silver dollars,” add a sculptural look to a styled coffee table via Varpunen.
A mini forest of dried Queen Anne’s lace and billy buttons makes this table setting look lush and delicate all at once. Bonus: you’ll love blogger Aline’s DIY ideas to complete this decor idea! By My Little Fabric.

Consider Branches
Fall is the perfect time to decorate with branches. Far from being stark, their twisting shapes help bring life into our living spaces. You can play with the look by choosing between bare or leafy branches.

Although the overall look of this living room is similar, the effect is softened by using smaller branches in a clear vase, and adding touches of blush to the space. Via Coco Lapine Design.
Grouped with candles, a few branches and eucalyptus sprigs create a cozy atmosphere that can extend from fall into winter. Via Making Your Home Beautiful.
Those red berries that grow on bushes in the fall are just as beautiful indoors, as in this Swedish home (for sale!) from Fantastic Frank.
To bring the warm tones of fall into your home, try picking branches just as the leaves are turning. Here a green vase provides a contrast to the red and orange leaves in the Boxwood Avenue kitchen.
Or Try Neutral Bouquets
Autumn is a time for toning down the bright colors of summer. When crafting a bouquet for fall, choose neutral palettes with greens, browns, pinks, and oranges. Not only will this capture the calmer atmosphere of fall, but you’ll usually save money by picking blooms that are in-season.

Punch up the color of a neutral bouquet by using complementary shades of the same family. Dark red, peach, and copper tones combine in a striking bouquet by Vervain floral design studio.

Receptionist by day and crafter the rest of the time, Marlene believes creativity is what life was made for. Her blog Idle Hands Awake is a DIY and design blog for creatives-in-the-making. When not harassing the poor folks at her local craft store or painting all the things, you can find Marlene curled up with her cat, a chai tea, and a library book. She also sometimes still has time for her friends (if they’re holding up props during photo shoots).
