Whether you caught a glimpse of an inviting Spanish dwelling on TV or you have just been walking through the streets of Madrid, it’s no surprise you’re interested in upgrading your home with Spanish decor. Spain is undoubtedly a captivating source for home styling, from the sophisticated designs to the earthy feel.
What makes up this unique European flair may be hard to determine. Roman and Moorish influences show how diverse and artistic these styles can be. How can you bring Spain into your living space? This guide can explain the details of a polished Spanish home and how you can achieve the same effect. Check out these six ways to deck out your place.
1. Decorative Geometric Patterns
Whatever the backdrop, Spanish design features sharp patterns and intricate looks. The geometric sequences have plenty of swirls and floral elements, and each one is intriguing. Add a mosaic-inspired frame around your door to make your home’s entrance pop.
You can also play with vivid fabrics to bring in these patterns, like incorporating a textured throw blanket or exotic drapes. Find a textile rug lined with tassels for your entryway to integrate the patterns from top to bottom in your home.
2. Tiling
Two kinds of tiling are prominent in Spanish homes. The first, clay roof tiling, adds rich color and a rustic ambiance to the outside of your home. Adding this long-lasting material to your house can capture the historic charm you’re looking for. You can install barrel or flat-shape tiles to suit your place and preference, too.
The second type of tiling is a glazed interior decoration called Talavera tiling, which gives off a shiny appearance. These baked ceramic tiles often have hand painted accents, and they make beautiful kitchen backsplashes or bathroom trim. Start your next home project with these artisan tiles.
3. Terracotta Elements
With a burnt orange color, this material is woven into many aspects of a Spanish theme. The porous material can dress up your living area through rugged pots, light fixtures and ornamental sculptures.
Go for an adobe-esque appearance by shopping for terracotta-colored home accessories. If you have a green thumb, transfer your plants into classic terracotta planters or dress them up with extra ribbing and height.
4. Old-World and Colonial Feel
You might not be able to restructure your home to match Spanish architecture, but you can rearrange your place to accommodate some of the appeal of Old-World style. Reading or napping nooks show up in several buildings, so clear out one of your low window sills to replicate a cozy alcove.
Ceiling beams and arched entries are also characteristics of the Colonial period that you can highlight if your home allows. Solid stone floors boost the organic fashion of Old-World Spain, and dark wood stains are a defining factor of this time. Re-stain your home’s wooden furniture to get a deep tone to turn it into a classic and refined residence.
5. Warm Color Palette
While earthy tones are the foundation for the Spanish color scheme, vibrant hues dominate this look. The warmest shades are adopted in interior and exterior design, but the most reoccurring color is a rusty red. To reflect the warmth of Spain, follow a palette of coral, amber and crimson.
6. Wrought-Iron Details
Ornate Spanish homes have wrought-iron railings and furnishings. From benches to wall hangings, this dark and substantial metal adds a Mediterranean ambiance. Detailed ironwork with lots of spirals and coils can give these accents a lavish boost, too.
If you’re constructing a new balcony, avoid lighter metals and opt for this tough material. Hang a heavy chandelier with impressive ironwork in your living room for your guests to gaze up at or encase your outdoor light fixtures in wrought iron for an authentic touch.
