I love celebrating a new season with different wreaths on our doors, but I don’t love storing eight different wreaths (we have two visible “front doors”) and I certainly won’t have time to make new ones every three months once baby Provencher makes her appearance. Because from what I hear, you get a little busier once you’re a mama 😉 So I came up with the idea to create a base wreath and then just make interchangeable bows that I can swap out each season. So today I’m sharing how to make a wreath bow out of ribbon that will make seasonal decorating a snap. One wreath, four seasons!
Above is a quick video tutorial so you can get a taste of the project, but keep reading for more detailed info….
Here’s what you’ll need for your bow:
- Wide, wired ribbon in four seasonal colors (I love this one)
- Alligator clips
- Wire
- Scissors
- Wire cutters
Begin by creating a 6 inch loop on the left side of your work surface as shown above. This is the only tricky part about learning how to make a wreath bow out of ribbon… if the pattern on your ribbon isn’t double-sided, fold the ribbon in the middle at a 120 degree angle and create a 6 inch loop on the right side.
If your ribbon is double-sided, simply fold it in half without angling it in the middle.
Repeat the process, reducing the loop size by an inch each time.
Once you’ve created 10 loops, cut a 12 inch piece of wire (don’t mind my ancient pliers… you might want to try these awesome ones instead 🙂 #PlierGoals). Pinch the middle of the bow and wrap the wire once or twice tightly around the middle point. Tighten with your fabulous new pliers.
Slip the back part of the clip through the wire loop on the back of the bow and then continue wrapping the wire around both the ribbon and the back of the clip.
Fan out the ribbon loops around the center point so they form something that resembles a bow, and then fluff each loop so it looks full. Clip the bow onto your pre-made or store-bought wreath and you’re all finished!
I made my base wreath by hot gluing faux fiddle leaf fig leaves and lamb’s ear leaves to a twig wreath. Just be sure to leave an 8 inch gap for the bow. And when the seasons change, simply unclip the current bow and clip on another one! Although I just absolutely adore the black and white striped ribbon so it might be hard to swap it out came fall 🙂
Here’s what it looks like with a cream colored burlap ribbon. I also made a gold version, and plan to make a red bow for Christmas.
Now that you know how to make a wreath bow out of ribbon that you can swap out each season, I hope you’ll be inspired to create other time-saving seasonal decor!
