Here’s a little-known fact about our house… we’ve never had a key to the front door 🙂 We use the side doors mostly, but getting a new lock was one of those things that has been on our endless to-do list since we moved in. And I kept hearing about these smart locks that were becoming popular, so I decided to give the Delaney smart lock a try. I mean… the rest of our house uses smart technology, so I didn’t want a dumb lock!
You guys, this is the best smart lock… I just love the way it turned out, with the dark bronze colored hardware that coordinates with our house numbers and exterior lights. (Please ignore the half dead shrubs… it was a long winter.) We chose this lock from Delaney on Wayfair, and we couldn’t be happier. They have a ton of other options though too, in case you’re on the hunt for a different style.
These locks are invaluable for those times when you have someone house-sitting, a dog walker coming or in emergency situations when you need someone to do something at the house for you.
And I can’t even tell you guys how easy the installation process was. Removing the dumb lock and replacing it with the smart one was much quick and easier than I expected. The only tool you should need is a screwdriver and it only took my handy husband about a half hour to get it and running.
I had trouble envisioning how a smart lock would fit into the same opening as the old-fashioned kind of lock, so I’ve included a few photos of how it looks during installation so you can get a better sense of what the process looks like. The installation is somewhat similar to a regular deadbolt, but there will be a couple of small wires that stick out of the back of the door that will need to be connected with the battery pack.
There’s a metal plate that attaches to the back of the door, and this holds the battery pack in place. It’s hidden once the installation is complete.
Screw the battery pack on and add AA batteries and you’re ready to customize your lock settings! You can create multiple codes, and you can also change them whenever you like. It can be connected to Delaney’s Z-Wave system so you can even check your phone to see if your door is locked!
We installed a coordinating knob since our old one was chrome (plus, it had seen better days). Installing a new knob should be simple if your existing knob is a standard size, but ours (of course) was not… #thisoldhouse. But it was a simple fix – we just enlarged the hole a tiny bit with a large drill bit and it fit like a glove. If you’re blessed with a normal door knob hole then installing the knob should be even quicker than installing the smart lock.
I’m so happy with the way it turned out… and now we have a way to get into our front door. So that’s a plus 😉
