Our guest room needs help. It’s one of those rooms that accumulates all the stuff that we don’t know what to do with. It’s also one of the very few rooms that we didn’t paint when we moved in. But this is all about to change.

I’ve always been intrigued by the One Room Challenge project, where participants get six weeks to completely make over one room. And while there are only 20 hand-picked official participants, anyone can be a guest participant… so I decided to do it!

Here is the sad state of affairs in our guest room. It’s an awkward shape, thanks to the vaulted ceilings and the protruding area on the left which hides a chimney.

I love the way the textures and colors feel so balanced in this space… that’s my goal for our guest room. Our current space feels very unfocused (and totally messy too), so I’d really like to hone in on a style and stick with it throughout the whole room.

Because I’m a list person, here are my main action items:

  • Paint the accent wall dark turquoise and the rest of the walls white
  • Buy new headboard or hack existing one to be shorter so it fits in front of the window
  • Install shelving that flanks the chimney
  • Paint dresser and end tables
  • Buy larger bedside lamps
  • Hang new curtains
  • Buy/make new art, throw pillows, etc.

So I hope you enjoy following along as I share my progress on my turquoise guest room makeover.  And perhaps my One Room Challenge journey will help inspire you to tackle a tough area in your home as well! Here are this year’s official One Room Challenge designers, and here is the list of fellow guest designers.
