How To Design Your Bedroom For A Great Night’s Sleep

For those of you who don’t know me… I’m not a morning person. (And to those of you who have ever encountered me in the morning – SORRY.) The amount and quality of sleep is directly proportional to my mood the next morning, so you can see why I make an effort to get a great night’s sleep every single night 🙂
And regardless of whether or not you’re chipper in the morning, you should try to get a good night’s sleep too. So today I’m sharing some tips and tricks for optimizing your bedroom for higher quality sleep.

CREATE A CALM ATMOSPHERE. Give your space a relaxing feel by using color strategically and limiting clutter. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to avoid color or pattern altogether… you can see that I have both. But use it sparingly, in small doses. And sticking to one or two general ranges of colors will help – I’ve gone with whites and grays paired with dark turquoise blue.

BUY A GREAT SET OF SHEETS. This probably goes without saying… but the more comfortable your body is, the better you’ll sleep. So be sure to get a nice set of sheets that are 300 thread count or higher. I chose Wayfair’s Dearmond cotton sheet set. They are 400 thread count cotton so they’re super soft and breathable. And at $49 for a queen set, they won’t break the bank!

CHOOSE YOUR LIGHTING WISELY. As the sun goes down, our bodies naturally begin slowing down in preparation for sleep… but with all of the phone and computer screens and bright LED lights, sometimes our bodies have a hard time realizing that it’s time for bed. So I recommend placing a  lamp right by your bed so you don’t have to get up to switch it off, and put a low wattage warm white bulb in it so that you have just enough light to read – not to light the entire room. And if you must look at your phone, be sure to set it to automatically switch to a warmer yellow toned screen after 9pm (this is called “Night Shift” on the iPhone, and you can find it in the display and brightness settings).
BLOCK OUTSIDE LIGHT. It’s also important to keep street lights and car headlights from shining through your windows. I use a combination of blinds and thick curtains, but you might also consider light block shades.

GET A WHITE NOISE MACHINE. If you live anywhere that there is street noise, you may want to buy a white noise machine. It dulls the sound of cars, horns, etc. and lets you have a more calm night’s sleep. Many of them aren’t so attractive, but that’s easily remedied by stashing one inside of a pretty basket.

And most importantly, be sure to add cozy touches so that you’re excited to hop into bed. Faux fur has been my go-to lately. And once you’ve gotten a great night’s sleep, you’ll wake up refreshed and ready to take on the day.
