- 10″ of 5mm soft cotton rope
- Assorted embroidery floss
- Scissors
- Embroidery needle
- Wine stopper/pourer
Begin by tying your first color around the rope, 1/3 of the way down the rope. Double knot it, and then wrap the embroidery floss around the rope repeatedly, covering up the tail. Continue wrapping until you have a strip that’s about 3/4″ long.
If you are alternating smaller sections of color, you can tie both together at the bottom of your first color and then just wrap one at a time.
You can see this process above. You’ll cover up all of the tails as you continue wrapping, ensuring that they are secure.
Once you’ve finished one color, switch to the other one and wrap around and around as you’ve done before. Continue this process for about two inches, then go back to your very first color and do another section that’s 3/4″ long. Tie off the end with a double knot.
Now is the time to slip the stopper onto the rope.
Line up the bottom sections of color and then tie them together with your last embroidery floss color. Tie a double knot, and then wrap it around both pieces of rope until you have a 3/4″ section.
Knot the end, then slip it onto an embroidery needle. Slide the needle in between the two rope ends and pull the needle through. Cut the floss right where it becomes visible.
Trim the ends of the rope so they are even, and then separate the strands of the rope. Now go pour yourself a glass of wine and replace the cork with your fancy new stopper!
You can really get creative with the colors and patterns… I love the look of the greens on this tassel with the beautiful colors on the Côtes de Provence Rosé. Summer in a bottle!
You might also use this same technique to make other things, like wine charms to keep track of guests’ glasses… that’s definitely next on my list. Happy crafting everyone!
