Here are my top five favorite places to view art in Boston, each for its own unique reasons:
Howard Yezerski Gallery
For its thought-provoking shows and intimate setting, the Howard Yezerski Gallery in the South End tops the list. Howard, the owner, is always interested in discussing the artwork on display, and the work that he selects is innovative and contemporary. 460 Harrison Avenue, A16.
Institute of Contemporary Art
The ICA has it all: ground-breaking exhibitions, fascinating lectures, a comprehensive museum shop, and an occasional dance party or two. Even the building itself is contemporary – a portion of it extends precariously out over the water. 100 Northern Avenue.
Martin Lawrence Gallery
Warhol, Chagall, Haring, and Picasso are just a few of the names that grace the walls of the Martin Lawrence Gallery. Enough said. 77 Newbury Street.
Museum of Fine Arts
The outside of this museum is under construction, but don’t judge a book by its cover; the stunning interior is filled with wonderful art covering a wide range of eras and all parts of the globe. 465 Huntington Avenue.
Robert Klein Gallery
The Robert Klein Gallery showcases photography as its sole medium, so of course I must include it on this list. They have a diverse selection of nineteenth and twentieth century photography, but they also have some excellent contemporary pieces to round out their collection. Very inspiring. 38 Newbury Street, fourth floor.
This goes to show that there really is a happening art scene in Boston. Did I miss anything? Any amazing galleries that I should know about? Do tell….
